In July 2014, during what’s known in the Northwest Territories as the summer of smoke, one wildfire grew uncontrollably, destroying Kristen Olesen’s house and guest cabin near Fort Reliance. Charred tree stands were left covering the already barren landscape— a stark and beautiful contrast to the colourful northern sky.
Olesen was the 2016 Up Here Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner for this photograph taken the following winter.
“I took this shot in February 2015 while my daughter Liv and I were returning home from clearing our trail system. On the run home I could see that the sun was low in the sky, causing some great shadows in the now open and barren landscape. I was hanging on with one hand and shooting with the other as the dogs pulled us down the trail.”
Congratulations to all of our category winners and those who earned honourable mention, and thanks to Nikon Canada for providing the grand prize!
