Spring is coming back and that means it's Toonik Tyme in Iqaluit, where last night Iqalungmiut hit up the community curling rink for an opening ceremony that saw a performance by Pangnirtung artist Joey Nowyuk and a fashion show of parkas handmade through Ilitaqsiniq, the Nunavut Literacy Council.

Organizers from the local non-profit 123 Go! kicked off the two-week festival by announcing this years' honourary tooniks, Rebecca Veevee and Lew Phillip. Veevee is a recipient of the Governor Generals meritorious service medal for her work promoting traditional foods. In Iqaluit she's known as "the laughing chef" for her work as the high-spirited host of the popular Inuit language cooking show, Niqitsiat. Phillip is a talented carver and retired RCMP officer.
