The border between ice and water on a lake is a lot like spring. During the liminal time between the long northern winter and the short northern summer, we get a bit of both seasons. But we also get something different (and not just mud, though there’s plenty of that). Spring calls us to go outside and do something we haven’t been able to do for months—something like kayaking along the edge of the ice on a subarctic lake.
