Dogsled racing has a long tradition in the North, and the Yukon Quest is renowned as a gruelling experience for the animals and their humans. The event has gone through several route changes in recent years, but it remains a prestigious competition. Here, veteran musher Michelle Phillips and her team throw long shadows in the late afternoon sun as they cross Braeburn Lake during the 2022 Yukon Quest 300, which follows the first part of the full route. She finished second and won the Sportsmanship Award. Phillips co-owns Tagish Lake Kennel with her husband and has now been mushing for more than a quarter of a century. She won the Yukon Quest 450 in 2025.
